My name is May, a bilingual (English and Mandarin) therapist with 6+ years of counseling experience who was born and raised in Shanghai. I came to the U.S. as a teen, and now I live in NYC. I have been a therapist for the past six years working with a variety of populations with different needs and struggles in life. I have interned at a public art high school and then a community mental health center in Philadelphia. Previously, I worked at a nonprofit in Brooklyn helping Asian and Latino immigrant families by providing individual, couple, and family trauma-informed therapy for four years.

I put strong emphasis on understanding how my client's lived experience intertwines with different systems, including their family of origin, society, cultures, etc. My own journey of living in different places and being exposed to different cultural and gender values at different stages of my life often leads me to reflect on the challenges of acculturation and the importance of cultural sensitivity in my practice. I have been really enjoying helping my multicultural clients explore their own identities and feel seen.

My Specialty

I primarily work with Asian-Americans, guiding them through the complex layers of their lived experiences. Much of my work centers around helping individuals process past trauma related to family dynamics and the feeling of being “never good enough”. Themes of cultural adaptation, identity exploration, definition of success and achievement, and intergenerational relationships—particularly the often complicated bonds with parents—frequently emerge in our conversations. My goal is to create a space where my clients feel seen, validated, and supported on their journey toward healing and self-understanding. I find joy in helping all my clients to find their own voices and confidence in what they want so that they could live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I take on an integrative approach which combines elements of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Family System, psychodynamic, strength-based, etc., depending on each client's needs and preferences. I create a safe space for all of my clients where I help them explore whatever is on their mind, set up individualized goals collaboratively, and further expand their perspectives and awareness to achieve healing and growth.

Symptoms I treat:

  • Anxiety: overthinking, rumination, spiraling, procrastination...

  • Depression: low mood, lack of motivation and interest, feeling lost and hopeless, guilt...

  • Relationship stress: with family, significant other, friends, colleagues, etc.

  • Low self-esteem: self-criticism, imposter syndrome, never being good enough

  • Complex Trauma: painful memories, flashbacks, avoidance of certain stimuli

  • Acculturation and Immigration stress
