Complex Trauma

What is Complex Trauma?

Complex trauma is also called as Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). It arises from prolonged or repeated trauma, particularly in situations where escape isn’t possible. Unlike PTSD, which is often tied to a single event, CPTSD involves broader impacts, including difficulties with emotional regulation, a negative self-concept, and strained relationships. Additionally, while PTSD involves a life-threatening event, complex trauma might not meet that threshold but can still profoundly affect someone.

What are the symptoms of CPTSD?

  • flashbacks and intrusive memories

  • avoidance of reminders of the trauma

  • difficulty regulating emotions

  • chronic feelings of guilt, shame, or worthlessness

  • dissociation

  • difficulty trusting and maintaining relationships

Three Stages of Recovery

  1. establishing safety and stabilization

    • safe housing, financial safety, a stable daily routine, basic needs met

    • mastering stress management techniques, grounding exercises, working with a therapist, creating a support system of trusted people

  2. processing traumatic memories

  3. reconnecting with daily life

    • rebuilding relationships, developing interests and hobbies, setting and achieving goals
